ADWEEK: A New Profile Series Honors AAPI Creative Talent Across Marketing

Adweek partners with Asians in Advertising for a new project, the AAPI Creative Spotlight

By Shannon Miller

Non-profit organization Asians in Advertising has quickly established itself as a prominent advocate for the advancement of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) professionals in the marketing industry. Now it’s teaming up with Adweek to honor its creative community for AAPI Heritage Month.

Beginning May 1, Adweek will host the AAPI Creative Spotlight series, a daily celebration of AAPI visionaries who are changing the ad industry with their unique approaches to branding and creativity.

“It was Adweek’s Asian town hall in February 2021 that inspired me to create Asians in Advertising with co-founder Jessalin Lam,” Asians in Advertising co-founder Bernice Chao told Adweek. “We are so incredibly honored to be able to partner with Adweek for this spotlight series.”

Honorees range from copywriters to acclaimed directors, junior creatives to leading executives—all of whom have a very specific vision to share with consumers and fellow creatives. The series is meant to showcase the wealth of creative innovation that exists among a community that continues to fight for increased visibility and equity.

“We’ve experienced firsthand how hard it is for Asian creatives to stand out in the field,” said Chao. “Even after reaching out to those we were going to feature, they were so incredibly astounded that they were even considered, several responded to see if we had contacted the right person. It just shows how little recognition and amplification Asians in our industry are used to receiving.”

“Hopefully the industry will take a hard look at their creative department to see if diversity is represented at all levels and to consider us for the exciting briefs, promotions, leadership and production,” she added.

Members of Asians in Advertising and Adweek’s editorial staff nominated this year’s group of honorees. Every day, this post will be updated with the latest featured creative. Check out the 2022 AAPI Creative Spotlight series below:
